Which beard for which face shape?
| Face shape | Beard that suits it | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| Round | Short on the cheeks, longer at the chin: goatee, extended circle beard | A vertical line makes the face look longer |
| Square | A full beard slightly rounded at the chin, short neat stubble | Softens an angular jawline |
| Long | Fuller cheeks with a shorter chin; a short full beard | Horizontal fullness widens the face |
| Oval | Almost any style: stubble, full beard, circle beard | Balanced proportions carry any style |
| Heart | A medium-length full beard, full at the chin and jaw | Adds volume to a narrow chin and balances a wide forehead |
| Diamond | Full at the chin, medium density on the cheeks | Balances chin and forehead with the cheekbones |
Beard lines: cheek and neck
The cheek line is usually cleaned close to its natural edge and only slightly defined; dropping it too low widens the face. The neckline should sit about two fingers above the Adam’s apple. Set too high, it makes the chin look small; too low, the beard looks unkempt.
What if your beard is patchy?
For a thin or patchy beard, short stubble with a sharp neckline gives the cleanest result. Letting it grow for a few weeks is also a good way to see whether the gaps fill in. Ask your barber about suitable care products if you want a longer-term solution.
Care and shaping frequency
- Stubble: trim at the same guard every 2–4 days.
- Short and medium beards: clean the lines weekly; have it shaped at the barber every 2–3 weeks.
- Long beards: daily care with beard oil and a comb; shape every 3–4 weeks.
Plan it with your haircut
Beard and hair work best designed as one; with fades in particular, the sideburn should blend seamlessly into the beard. For the hair side, see men’s haircuts for your face shape. Beard design is one of the services at Muharrem Bilen salons.
